Worum geht‘s in der Musik? Am Anfang beginnen und am Ende ankommen, dazwischen schön spielen.
Für die meisten Musiker beginnt dieser Tripp links oben und endet rechts unten auf dem Notenblatt. Selbst im Jazz gibt es meist eine Form, eine Karte sozusagen, deren Start- und Zielpunkt auf mehr oder minder geradem Weg, mit Abkürzungen und ausschweifenden Soloschlingen erreicht wird.
„To boldly go, where no one has gone before“, die Devise des Raumschiffs Enterprise ist hingegen auch die Maxime für das holländisch-hamburgische Duo Tandem. Es sind nicht nur die Zuhörer, die sich mit Schlagzeuger Hans-Peter Stiller und Keyboarder Nico Moll ins Unbekannte aufmachen – auch die beiden Musiker selber wissen nicht immer, wohin die Reise ihrer musikalischen Erkundungen führt.
Dafür braucht es Mut und – Zeit! Anders als im Häppchenjazz, wo man schon nach wenigen Sekunden weiß, wie die Reise ausschaut, sind Titel von Tandem stets Tripps ins Ungewisse. Wayne Shorters Aussage, „Jazz ist eine Reise ins Unbekannte. Hinter jeder Ecke könnte etwas Neues lauern, das plötzlich aus dem Busch springt und „Huh!“ macht!“, nimmt das Duo beim Wort – auch im Bandnamen: Im Lateinischen bedeutet „tandem“ u.a. „auf die Dauer“.
Für Fahrten dieser Art muss man seinen Partner kennen, ihm vertrauen. Zusammengefahren sind Hans-Peter Stiller und Nico Moll schon oft und viel, auf ihrem Debütalbum Facing the Same Direction 2010, auf mehreren Veröffentlichungen als musikalische Weggefährten und Produzenten literarisch-musikalischer Hörbücher auf ihrem 2004 gegründeten MSP Production-Label, aber auch als kollegialer Maschinenraum in der getakteten Kartographie des Jazz für Acts wie die Midnight Band, Stiller dazu als Schlagzeuger für den NDR, Moll als Pianist, Organist und Lehrer in Holland.
Insofern hat das Duo für seine Reisen auch ein musikalisches GPS mit fundierten Daten an Bord, technisches Wissen um die musikalische Gestaltung (vgl. den Radio-Satelliten zur Erdvermessung, TanDEM-X). Eine gute Vorbereitung macht die Hälfte der Reise aus, auch beim Tripp in den offenen Raum eines Spacejazz à la Tandem.
„Wenn einer eine Reise tut, dann kann er was erzählen“. Bei Tandem hingegen sind Ausführende und Rezipienten gemeinsam an Bord. Wie die Reise reüssiert, ist ein Abenteuer – für Musiker und Hörer gleichermaßen.
Um also auf die Eingangsfrage zurückzukommen, worum geht‘s bei Tandem? Um‘s Unterwegssein!

„Elixier“: Das hat was von fjordisch-skandinavischem ECM-Jazz, ist aber dichter getaktet, der musikalische Zaubertrank führt durch Gestrüpp und Unterholz, durch Dur und Moll auf immer neue Ebenen, in immer neue Welten, bis der Wanderer schließlich mit akustischen Klavierklängen oben auf dem Gipfel ankommt.
„Fjord“: Die Wasseroberfläche grummelt unruhig im Tandem-“Fjord“. Von tief unten blubbern die Töne empor, eine dramatische kleine Schubwelle wälzt sich schließlich über den Fjord.
„Glasses 1 & 2“: Pat Metheny guckt soundtechnisch von seinem „Offramp“-Album aus ein bisschen zu, wie sich Harmoniesprengsel und Grooves in einem Kaleidoskop der Klänge tektonisch in- und übereinander schieben.
„Visit“: Ob das ein freundlicher Besuch wird? Was zu Beginn wie ein Erkundungsgang durch ein Gruselhaus klingt, changiert unvermutet ins Dur, wird zum dynamischen Besichtigungstermin und endet beim freundlichen Nachmittagskaffee im sonnigen Garten.

What’s music all about? Start at the beginning and arrive at the end, play nicely in between.
For most musicians, this trip begins at the top left and ends at the bottom right of the sheet music. Even in jazz, there is usually a form, a map, so to speak, whose start and finish point are reached on a more or less straight path, with shortcuts and excessive solo loops.
„To boldly go, where no one has gone before“, the motto of the starship Enterprise, on the other hand, is also the maxim for the Dutch-Hamburg duo Tandem. It is not only the listeners who set out into the unknown with drummer Hans-Peter Stiller and keyboarder Nico Moll – even the two musicians themselves do not always know where the journey of their musical explorations leads.
This takes courage and time! Unlike in appetizer jazz, where you know after just a few seconds what the journey looks like, tandem titles are always trips into the unknown. Wayne Shorter’s statement, „Jazz is a journey into the unknown. Something new could lurk behind every corner, which suddenly jumps out of the bush and makes „Huh!“, take the duo at its word – also in the band name: In Latin, „tandem“ means amongst others „in the long run“.
For trips of this kind, you have to know your partner, trust him. Hans-Peter Stiller and Nico Moll have come together many times, on their debut album Facing the Same Direction (2010), on several releases as musical companions and producers of literary-musical audiobooks on their MSP Production label founded in 2004, but also as a collegial engine room in the bar cartography of jazz for acts such as the Midnight Band, Stiller as a drummer for a German broadcasting company, Moll as a pianist, organist and teacher in Holland.
In this respect, the duo also has a musical GPS with well-founded data on board for their travels, technical knowledge of the musical design (cf. the radio satellite for earth surveying, TanDEM-X). A good preparation makes up half of the trip, even when tripping into the open space of Spacejazz à la Tandem.
„If someone does a journey, then he can tell something“. At Tandem, on the other hand, performers and recipients are on board together. How the journey succeeds is an adventure – for musicians and listeners alike.
To come back to the initial question, what is Tandem all about? It is to do a journey.

Waar gaat muziek over? Begin bij het begin en kom aan het einde, speel lekker tussendoor.
Voor de meeste muzikanten begint deze tripp linksboven en eindigt rechtsonder in de bladmuziek. Zelfs in de jazz is er meestal een vorm, een kaart, zogezegd, waarvan het begin- en eindpunt op een min of meer recht pad wordt bereikt, met snelkoppelingen en debauchedn solo slings.
„Om moedig te gaan, waar nog nooit iemand is geweest“, is het motto van het sterrenschip Enterprise daarentegen ook de stelregel voor het Nederlands-Hamburgse duo Tandem. Het zijn niet alleen de luisteraars die met drummer Hans-Peter stiller en toetsenist Nico Moll het onbekende in gaan- zelfs de twee muzikanten zelf weten niet altijd waar de reis van hun muzikale verkenningen toe leidt.
Dit kost moed en tijd! In tegenstelling tot voorgerechtjazz, waar je al na een paar seconden weet hoe de reis eruit ziet, struikelen tandemtitels altijd in het onbekende. Wayne Shorter: „Jazz is een reis naar het onbekende. Achter elke hoek, die plotseling uit de bush springt en „Huh!“, neem het duo op zijn woord – ook in de bandnaam: In het Latijn betekent „tandem“ „op de lange termijn“.
Voor dit soort reizen moet je je partner kennen, hem vertrouwen. Hans-Peter Stiller en Nico Moll zijn vele malen en vele malen samengekomen, op hun debütalbum Facing the Same Direction 2010, op verschillende releases als muzikale metgezellen en producenten van literair-muzikale luisterboeken op hun in 2004 opgerichte MSP Productionlabel, maar ook als collegiale machinekamer in de getagdecartografie van jazz voor acts als de Midnight Band, Stiller als drummer voor de NDR, Moll als pianist, organist en docent in Nederland.
In dit opzicht heeft het duo ook een muzikale GPS met gefundeerde gegevens aan boord voor hun reizen, technische kennis van het muzikale ontwerp (cf. de radiosatelliet voor aardmeting, TanDEM-X). Een goede voorbereiding vormt de helft van de reis, zelfs wanneer je in de open ruimte van een Spacejazz à-la tandem struikelt.
„Als iemand een reis maakt, dan kan hij iets vertellen“. Bij Tandem daarentegen zijn performers en ontvangers samen aan boord. Hoe de reis slaagt is een avontuur – voor zowel muzikanten als luisteraars.

„Bezoek“: Wordt dit een vriendelijkebes uch? Wat in het begin klinkt als een verkenning van een griezelig huis, verandert onverwacht in groot, wordt een dynamische kijkdatum en eindigt met een vriendelijke middagkoffie in de zonnige tuin.
